JACOB AND THE UNDERWORLD

Jacob and the Underworld is a fantastical tale of magic and bravery especially aimed at younger students of English. It’s about a naughty little boy who, after a series of adventures in a strange land called the Underworld, learns important lessons about making friends, looking after all living creatures and caring for the environment.

The play is highly interactive and includes original music composed by the acclaimed US artist, Eric Schwartz. Extensive material for the classroom has also been highly valued by teachers.

df

Jacob is a naughty(1) Spanish boy who one day goes to the beach(2) with his family. He starts to dig(3) for crabs(4) when he sees the leg(5) of a big crab and digs more and more. Suddenly, the beach opens up and he falls(6) down and down, landing with a THUMP in a land called the Underworld.
Then he meets the big crab. Her name is Crabby and she is angry(7) because Jacob hurt(8) her. Crabby is a special crab. She has only got six legs and two arms(9). Soon she forgets(10) she is angry with Jacob and they become friends(11). The problem is Jacob cannot return(12) to the beach and his mother and father. He is worried(13) but Crabby suggests they look for(14) the Magic Door(15), which is the only exit(16) from the Underworld. Then they meet Crabby’s friend, Rocky, who is an old rock(17). He will help them find the Magic Door but he warns(18) them about Feota Feet.

Feota Feet is a mad(19) woman who is always cold(20). She has an assistant called Bug-Mug, who is half man, half insect. Feota has very dangerous feet(21). They smell(22) very bad and are ‘stinko-active’. She uses her feet to warm(23) the Underworld. First she puts them in a bucket(24) to make a dangerous potion, and then she pour(25) it into the Heart(26).
The Heart is very important to the Underworld. It keeps the Underworld clean and well(27). But now the Heart becomes very sick(28) and very hot(29) with the horrible potion.
Jacob and Crabby are still looking for the Magic Door when they find(30) the Heart. They try to help(31) her but Feota Feet arrives and captures Jacob. Crabby escapes and looks for Rocky to help. But, can they save(32) Jacob and the Heart? And if they don’t save the Heart, the Underworld will die!(33) And will Jacob find the Magic Door and return to his family?
