TEACHERS’ MATERIALS.
LEVEL: Low intermediate to Intermediate (10 to 14 years)
The main objective of PENALTY is to motivate students of English with a fun, fast-moving, accessible script and true-to-life characters; and for those who love suspense, the climax of our play has plenty: a kidnapping, a rescue and a surprise ending. The level of English has been carefully graded for students from low intermediate to intermediate levels, or students aged between 10 and 14 years. Around 25% of the play is in Spanish.
The play also includes THEMES young audiences can identify with. We examine the world of sport and, as such, COMPETITIVITY. It is good to compete, but how far should one go in order to win?
COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS WITH PARENTS is another theme. How much control should a parent have in a young person’s choice of career? Who knows what is best, the parent or the teenager? As a parent, is your child an individual, or just an extension of yourself?
Another major theme in this play is BOY-GIRL
RELATIONSHIPS and the confused emotions teenagers feel for the person they have a crush on.
Then, more importantly, we include the theme of SEXISM. Teri encounters opponents and critics of her choice of career. Some laugh at the fact a girl wants to play and compete with boys. Shouldn’t she play more “girly” sports, like volleyball? Teri also comes across this attitude in other girls, and not just in the boys.
And finally, the FULFILMENT OF DREAMS.
Teri is a very special girl, not just because she is good at football, but because she has the strength to fulfil her dream. Many would have given up, but she didn’t. In the words of Goethe, “Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.”
Please look at the extensive teachers materials for use in the
classroom. They are a great tool to help prepare your students before
seeing the play (and for use AFTER seeing it). Read More

Una escena de PENALTY…
Teri arrives home after football training at school. Her father does not know that she has been playing football..
TERI: Hi, Dad.
FATHER: Hola, hija. You’re late again.
TERI: Well, yes. I’ve been studying. In the library.
FATHER: So you were in the library, eh? What were you studying?
TERI: History. I’ve got an exam tomorrow.
FATHER: Are you prepared?
TERI: Yes, I think so.
FATHER: (Her Dad sees the football kit in her bag)
History, eh? So you study the history of football at school, do you?
TERI: Look, Dad…
FATHER: No excuses! How many times do I have to repeat it? No more football. I’m going to speak to your teachers tomorrow morning. This has to stop.
TERI: Dad! Please, don’t! I can play football and study at the same time. You know I get good marks.
FATHER: Going to University is much more important.
TERI: I know university is important Dad, but I want to play professional football, too.
FATHER: No way! There is absolutely no future in women’s football.
TERI: That’s not true! There is a future! This is just the beginning.
FATHER: That’s enough! Go to your room.
TERI: Dad! ¡Escucha!
FATHER: That's enough I said!
