PENALTY

PENALTY is the story of Teri, a 16 year old teenager with an unusual dream for a girl of her age: to play professional football. Fulfilling her goal is by no means easy as she has to face the opposition of her father, some school friends and the Spanish football league. What can she do? Stay in Spain and give up her passion for the sport or try her luck in another country? … Teri decides to go to England where not only manages to play for a junior league team, she also gets herself mixed up in a very unusual, and highly dangerous, situation.

Inspired by a real life “Teri”, Penalty, has a fast-moving script and true-to-life characters. Young people can easily identify with its themes, such as sports, sexism, problems with parents and teenage love. What’s more, the English has been carefully graded for students aged between 10 and 14 years.

PENALTY tells the story of Teri, a young 16 year-old girl living in Spain. Teri has normal interests for a girl of her age (1). For example, music; languages and the cinema. But she also likes sports, especially football. She started to play (2) at the age of six and can play just as well - if not better - than most boys.

df At the beginning of the play, we see Teri in her new school talking to her English teacher, Jenny Adams, about her passion for football. Miss Adams says that Teri should (3) play for the boys’ football team (4). So Teri speaks to Sr. Pérez, the sports teacher and asks if she can play. At first Sr. Pérez says no because she is a girl, but when he sees Teri playing he says YES! Teri scores (5) nine goals for the school team in five matches, but her father is not happy. He doesn’t want her to play football. He wants her to study every day to prepare for university.

One day Teri receives a letter from the Football Federation: it says that Teri cannot play in the boys’ football league (6) because she is a girl. Teri is angry (7) but decides to go to England to try out (8) for the Manchester United junior team: if she can’t play football in Spain, she will play in England.

Teri arrives (9) in Manchester and meets the Manchester United football coach (10), Mr. Dunn, who is very surprised (11) to see that Teri is a girl. He expects to see a boy because Teri is a boy’s name in England. She meets (12) Mrs. Edwards, the manager of the Manchester United Under-18 (13) football team. Mrs Edwards is a very kind (14) woman and tells Teri that she can play for the Under-18 or junior team because she is a very good footballer.

Mr. Dunn is angry - he doesn’t like Teri and doesn’t want her to play in his team. Teri also meets Michael, Mrs Edwards’ son who is 17 years old and is the captain of the Under-18 or junior team. They become (15) good friends.

One evening, Michael invites Teri to have dinner (16) with him. They are having a good time (17) talking about the important football match they are going to play the next day when suddenly (18), a dangerous (19) man enters the house. He is wearing a mask (20) and is carrying a gun (21). He kidnaps (22) Teri and Michael can do nothing because he has a gun… Who is this mysterious man? Why does he kidnap Teri? …

NOTES FOR TEACHERS

AN EXTRACT

TEACHERS’ MATERIALS.

LEVEL: Low intermediate to Intermediate (10 to 14 years)

The main objective of PENALTY is to motivate students of English with a fun, fast-moving, accessible script and true-to-life characters; and for those who love suspense, the climax of our play has plenty: a kidnapping, a rescue and a surprise ending. The level of English has been carefully graded for students from low intermediate to intermediate levels, or students aged between 10 and 14 years. Around 25% of the play is in Spanish.

The play also includes THEMES young audiences can identify with. We examine the world of sport and, as such, COMPETITIVITY. It is good to compete, but how far should one go in order to win?

COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS WITH PARENTS is another theme. How much control should a parent have in a young person’s choice of career? Who knows what is best, the parent or the teenager? As a parent, is your child an individual, or just an extension of yourself?
Another major theme in this play is BOY-GIRL

RELATIONSHIPS and the confused emotions teenagers feel for the person they have a crush on.
Then, more importantly, we include the theme of SEXISM. Teri encounters opponents and critics of her choice of career. Some laugh at the fact a girl wants to play and compete with boys. Shouldn’t she play more “girly” sports, like volleyball? Teri also comes across this attitude in other girls, and not just in the boys.
And finally, the FULFILMENT OF DREAMS.

Teri is a very special girl, not just because she is good at football, but because she has the strength to fulfil her dream. Many would have given up, but she didn’t. In the words of Goethe, “Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.”

Please look at the extensive teachers materials for use in the classroom. They are a great tool to help prepare your students before seeing the play (and for use AFTER seeing it). Read More

Una escena de PENALTY…

Teri arrives home after football training at school. Her father does not know that she has been playing football..

TERI: Hi, Dad.

FATHER: Hola, hija. You’re late again.

TERI: Well, yes. I’ve been studying. In the library.

FATHER: So you were in the library, eh? What were you studying?

TERI: History. I’ve got an exam tomorrow.

FATHER: Are you prepared?

TERI: Yes, I think so.

FATHER: (Her Dad sees the football kit in her bag)
History, eh? So you study the history of football at school, do you?

TERI: Look, Dad…

FATHER: No excuses! How many times do I have to repeat it? No more football. I’m going to speak to your teachers tomorrow morning. This has to stop.

TERI: Dad! Please, don’t! I can play football and study at the same time. You know I get good marks.

FATHER: Going to University is much more important.

TERI: I know university is important Dad, but I want to play professional football, too.

FATHER: No way! There is absolutely no future in women’s football.

TERI: That’s not true! There is a future! This is just the beginning.

FATHER: That’s enough! Go to your room.

TERI: Dad! ¡Escucha!

FATHER: That's enough I said!
